Multi-vehicle Collision near Clairmont

Update #1 – 2012/02/20 @ 4:32 p.m.

A 6 vehicle collision just after 10:00 a.m. today on Highway 2 at Clairmont resulted in non life threatening injuries to five individuals and no fatalities.

Grande Prairie Rural RCMP say that 5 of the vehicles involved were stopped in the southbound lanes of divided Highway 2 and had been waiting for a train to pass.  A logging truck that was also southbound in the right lane was approaching the stopped vehicles from behind, and struck the back of a stopped car which in turn struck the car in front.  The two drivers of these vehicles (one male and one female) were taken to hospital.

The driver of the logging truck then reportedly moved toward the left lanes striking a pick up truck, which struck a second pick up truck, which in turn hit a van.  The 3 occupants of the van, female driver and two children, also attended a local area hospital.

The extent of the injuries is unknown, but all considered non life threatening.  Police say that fog in the area was present at the time of the collision, and continue their investigation to determine all contributing factors.

The highway remained closed until 2:30 p.m. today, as responders worked to clear the area.
